CHALLENGE
The client, a US-based healthcare technology company, had developed a platform to support oncologists in selecting the most relevant lab tests and treatment strategies. The product had been growing for six years and had already proven its stability.
However, the platform needed to be modernized to handle new integrations, larger data volumes, and evolving business needs. Our client planned to scale its operations, connect with more laboratories and clinics, and enhance automation for clinical and administrative workflows.
ENGAGEMENT STAGE
Our team joined the project when the platform was expanding quickly – already in its eighth year of active development – and in need of both scalable and functional growth. Because the product was well-maintained and continuously evolving, we were able to focus on modernization rather than recovery.
We migrated the oncology system from a monolithic architecture to a microservices architecture, splitting large modules into independent services for easier management and faster deployment.
The project was extensive and involved several external teams, but CHI Software specialists contributed to all directions: architecture modernization, backend development, integrations, testing, and performance optimization.
TRANSFORMATION
Our work on this healthcare decision support platform modernization changed the way the product evolved. Modular architecture gave the client freedom to add new services independently and scale specific features without downtime. The oncology software modernization also enhanced data synchronization and ensured real-time updates between medical and insurance systems.
Automation became central to daily workflows, thereby reducing repetitive operations for oncologists and administrators. Through this transformation, the platform became a modern oncology decision support tool that was capable of delivering accurate information faster to support confident, evidence-based clinical decisions.

DEVELOPMENT TEAM
SСALABILITY AND ARCHITECTURE
The platform had reached a stage where scaling became challenging. The team introduced an oncology platform microservices architecture to distribute workloads and support independent service updates, making the system more resilient and flexible.
INTEGRATION AND CONNECTIVITY
Each new clinic and laboratory that was added to the platform used different systems and data formats. The modernization established standardized APIs and connectors, ensuring smooth interoperability within the oncology decision support platform modernization effort
PERFOMANCE OPTIMIZATION
As data volumes increased, response times slowed down. Cloud deployment and optimized database queries improved speed and reliability, forming a key part of the oncology software modernization results.
SECURITY AND COMPLIANCE
Managing patient data required strict adherence to healthcare regulations. The new SSO authorization and encryption mechanisms provided full HIPAA and HL7 compliance.
AUTOMATION AND DATA ACCURACY
Manual operations were replaced with automated pipelines that validate and process data instantly. This change improved accuracy and reduced administrative workload across all connected institutions.
USER EXPERIENCE
A refreshed UI helped doctors access reports and recommendations faster, enhancing usability and supporting clinical decision support in oncology in everyday practice. A user-friendly UI enabled doctors to access reports faster, even on small or low-resolution monitors that may be in healthcare facilities. New components were tested as MVPs and refined based on feedback until the interface felt intuitive and easy to use.
STRATEGY
Modernization followed a structured clinical decision support system (CDSS) upgrade plan that emphasized scalability, data security, and modular development. Our focus was on continuous improvement, while keeping the system online and fully operational during deployment.
DEVELOPMENT PHASES
We enabled the client’s platform to transition from a monolithic to a microservices architecture in the oncology system, allowing each module to evolve independently and scale dynamically.
We implemented HL7 and REST APIs to be able to connect to external systems, following best practices in modernizing the legacy oncology system and ensuring seamless data flow between different healthcare providers.
We introduced background services that handle reporting, validation, and notifications automatically.
We built custom SSO authorization and applied advanced encryption protocols to protect sensitive patient information.
We migrated infrastructure to AWS Kubernetes, which improved uptime, load management, and response speed.
This oncology platform modernization introduced algorithms that automatically suggest optimal test sets for each patient.
Departments and partners can now share synchronized data streams, enabling faster clinical decision support in oncology.
A unified login system ensures secure, role-based access for all participating institutions.
The oncology platform microservices architecture allows new modules to be added without interrupting existing operations.
Instant data updates between laboratories, insurers, and clinics keep all information consistent and accessible.
Every service aligns with healthcare regulations, ensuring that patient data is always protected.
